Description
C. 1960 photograph depicting the Old Brattle Tavern located in Scollay Square of the West End in Boston, Massachusetts. The photo taken during the destruction of the West End. The Brattle was located next to an alley that ran from Cornhill to Brattle Street. It was the oldest continuously operating tavern in the nation having opened in 1766. Signage above the tavern reads ' Rowell Stamps - Whiteneck Coins, entrance 33 Cornhill '. The photo taken during the so called urban renewal project which leveled most of the neighborhood and swept Scollay Square, including the Brattle Tavern, into the ash heap of Boston's history. A light can be seen above the battered sign for the old tavern.
