Artist's Description

In 1943 an American convoy headed to Greenland was struck by a German U-Boat. One of the vessels, the USAT Dorchester, was hit mid section and immediately started to sink. On board the Dorchester four US Army Chaplains consisting of a Jewish Rabbi, a Catholic Priest and two Protestant ministers helped other soldiers onto lifeboats and handed out life jackets. When the life jackets ran out the chaplains removed their own and gave them away. After the last lifeboats were away, the chaplains prayed with those unable to escape the sinking ship. Twenty seven minutes after being hit by the torpedo, the Dorchester sunk with 672 men still on board. The four men were last seen standing on the deck, arms linked and in prayer. This 1948 three cent stamp commemorates their example of faith and patriotism.
