Before the First World War, this area of Africa was a part of German East Africa.After the war it was mandated to Britain and in 1946 came under the protection of the United Nations as a trust territory. The region became a sovereign state from 1961 through 1964. In 1964 the nation joined with Zanzibar and Pemba to form the nation of the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Less than a year later the new nation changed its name to the United Republic of Tanzania.
