Description
Henry Lee III, seen in this 19th century print serving as a cavalry officer with the Continental Army. At the outbreak of the American Revolution Lee became a captain in a Virginia dragoon company. In 1778 Lee was promoted to major and took command of a combined corps of cavalry and infantry known as " Lee's Legion." His horsemanship and abilities on the battlefield earned him the nickname of " Light Horse Harry ". He later served as Major General in the United States Army helping to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion in 1791 and was the ninth Governor of Virginia. Lee famously eulogized George Washington with his now famous quote:
" First in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen. George Washington was second to none in humble and enduring scenes of privatre life "
