A 1909 poster announcing the Don Portola festival to be held in San Francisco California. The festival was held to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the discovery of San Francisco Bay by Don Gaspar de Portol in 1769. But more importantly, the festival proved to the world that San Francisco had successfully emerged from the ruins of the great fire of 1906.
